Structural Steel Package
Tonnage: 16t
We were contracted to supply and install 16 tonnes of structural steel for a modern wrap-around extension to a traditional stone-built house on Ettrick Road, Edinburgh. The extension features striking apex roofs, which required a combination of modern steelwork and careful integration with the historic structure.
Our in-house draughting team used Tekla software to create a precise 3D model based on the architect’s and engineer’s specifications. We worked closely with a third-party engineer to design all the steel connections for the project, which were integrated into the model. Once the design was finalized, we produced detailed fabrication drawings, which were submitted to the client and design team for approval.
Once the designs were approved, we began fabrication. We ordered the necessary materials, and our team carefully cut, welded, and assembled all beams and plates. The steel was painted in-house to meet the project specifications, and some components were sent for galvanizing to ensure durability for the long term.
Once fabrication was complete, all materials were delivered to the site. Our erection team carefully installed the steel frame, which had to account for both the modern extension and the existing stone structure. Special attention was given to ensuring that the steel frame could support the apex roof design, which includes complex angles and modern aesthetics while integrating seamlessly with the original building.

The Result
The steel was carefully lined, leveled, and signed off, ensuring the structure was square, plumb, and aligned to the highest standards. Despite the challenges posed by combining a modern extension with the historic stone walls, the project was successfully completed, and the finished result is a striking blend of old and new, with a beautiful extension that enhances the character of the original house.
The client was delighted with the final result, and we are proud to have contributed to such a unique and innovative project.
